Fire Extinguisher Annual Servicing (recertification):

Fire Extinguishers should be inspected and serviced on an annual basis (or more frequently if you wish) to BS5306-3 2017 and manufacturer’s guidelines.

In addition to an annual inspection / service, every few years, 5 years for powder water and foam extinguishers and every 10 years for CO2, extinguishers are required to have an extended service.

The Extended Service and spare parts associated with this work usually makes up the biggest portion of your service invoice. It’s really important to obtain the total price you are going to pay for your fire extinguisher service. Some companies are getting their feet in the door by quoting a relatively low service / inspection price and then not carrying out the Extended Service required within British Standards. What they are doing is classifying all those extinguishers due an Extended Service (or Test) as ‘non-conforming appliances’ and not recertifying them. They then follow up their service visit with a rather scary letter listing all the ‘non-conforming appliances’ they have found and listing the potential H&S and insurance implications of not attending to these ‘non-conforming appliances’. Within that same letter they are recommending that the ‘non-conforming appliances’ are replaced with brand new ones. There is no need to arbitrarily replace extinguishers due their Extended Service with new ones.

When you consider that some of these other companies regularly charge up to 4 and 5 times our prices for new equipment (and we have come across a company charging 10 times our prices for new EN3 and British Standard approved extinguishers) you can see that costs can rapidly mount up for the customer.

These other companies could have simply carried out the Extended Service on those ‘non-conforming appliances’ and saved their customers a fortune – that’s what we do, we carry out the Extended Service on extinguishers when they are due per British Standards.

Our prices for carrying out the Extended Service of our customers extinguishers are significantly lower than the cost for us to replace them with our new extinguishers, so our customers benefit from a lower recertification cost.

We can service and recertify any manufacturer’s range of extinguishers.

Our engineers are fully qualified and third party trained & assessed to carry out this work for you. We don’t pay our engineers on commission to get through as many fire extinguishers as they can in a day, and we don’t pay them on commission to fit as many spare parts as they can get away with, or to upsell equipment. The only thing on our engineer’s mind when he attends your premises to service your extinguishers is to service them correctly to BS5306-3 2017. For these reasons our customers pay less for their fire equipment servicing compared to other fire equipment service companies out there.

ADR para 8.1.4 concerns fire extinguishers. The table below sets out a summary of the minimum requirements. Note that dry powder extinguishers are specified because it is known that they are suitable for tackling fires of class A (solids such as wood, paper etc),  class B (fires involving liquids) and class C (fires involving gases).
